Swipe recently launched MTV Slate Tablet and i am reviewing it here after using it for almost 3 weeks. I had been using this tablet extensively to test it from all aspects. And now since i have done tested it thoroughly, It’s time for you guys to know, whether Swipe MTV Slate [tablet] is a value for money gadget or not?
Design and Outlook
First impression of MTV slate tablet would be like holding an iPad mini in your hands, but it’s not and it does only enhance the beauty of it and the only difference which may differentiate this tablet from iPad mini is non-availability of middle round button at front and a removable small back cover at top where you can insert your sim and memory card. In terms of build quality, it is indeed good and has a metal back which again, cannot be removed and hence it gives a great solid feel to the device. Even the buttons provided at edges are also metallic like of volume up and down and power which gives a tactile feedback upon pressing them.
One of the best thing i like about MTV slate is the form factor i.e. having a 8inch display which doesn’t felt uncomfortable while handling nor you’ll feel it as small or big. I believe 8 inch display size is an ideal size for a tablet and 5inch size for a phone for perfect handling. Even though an 8inch tablet won’t fit your palm easily and becomes slightly difficult to hold it in one hand, but since it’s lighter in weight and display size is slightly smaller than 8inch i.e. 7.85inch, so you should not get any problem handling it easily.
Talking of Display, it does have a HD IPS display with 1024 x 768 pixels resolution, which is quite enough for a budget tablet may offer. We didn’t found any issue with display quality and every transition including animations were getting displayed smooth without any grainy output. Even when 187 ppi pixel density may not sound pleasent, still i enjoyed watching HD movies on it. However, the screen felt a little delicate, since it doesn’t have a gorilla glass, hence covering it with a screen guard is a must do thing. Also on outdoor, i found display not up to mark but workable.
Swipe MTV Slate offers 8 GB of internal memory for personal storage, however you’ll find only 5Gb approx available for the user. But it does have the extended memory support via memory card (supports memory card upto 32GB) and USB OTG too, so that you may connect any USB pen drive with ease.
This device has 3200 mAh of battery which may sounds enough for a day with moderate usage, however if you may watch a 2 hour length movie, it might need a recharge after usage of 10-12 hours. During the period of testing, i kept the brightness at 50% (since i don’t roam out much), kept the volume at average, watched a 2 hours length full HD movie and kept Wi-Fi ON whole day, it consumed that moment 15% of battery and then browsed internet for an hour and did some calls, which again resulted in approx drop of 15% battery usage. Hence, in total, the tablet lasted for a day max, which is good enough for an android tablet with calling facility.
This isn’t a dual SIM tablet but a single SIM tablet which is a good thing for getting better battery backup. And again, it has calling facility as well and provides both 2G and 3G internet access via your SIM connection. Also with Wi-Fi you can create hotspot, does have bluetooth connectivity, supports data transfer via Micro USB from your PC and supports OTG as well for connecting USB pen drives directly to the tablet.
Even though i hardly use camera of any tablet for clicking pics because of poor performance, Swipe MTV slate does an appreciable job in clicking pics, not too much good, not even bad. Unlike others, which offers only front camera, MTV slate offers dual camera with VGA at front and a 5MP camera at back, where front camera is suitable only for video calling, rear camera does a decent job in taking nice pictures with 5mp camera. Rear camera also supports face detection, self-timer, continuous shot and even panorama mode. The camera application is natively the one from stock android, however it does have an option to open gallery too.
OS and Interface
MTV slate has android 4.2.2 JellyBean operating system with a custom tweaked user interface and addition few other features. Custom user interface includes 5 touch button at bottom [addition of button of taking screenshots (extreme left) and pulling notification bar down (extreme right)], where usually android has only 3 buttons for return, home and recent tasks. The other three buttons here are meant for recent tasks, home and return, ordering it from right to left.
You can also operate this tablet single handed with help of floating icon which remains on screen no matter whatever app you may open whether its camera, games or movies. You can drag to any part of the screen as per your convenience. This icon helps you with providing shortcut for calls, messages, browser, settings and other 5 buttons which i described above. If you want this icon on your current android tablet or phone, you can download it as an app by name – Assistive touch for free from Google play store. Slate keyboard is also tweaked for one sided operation which brings all buttons to left or right, so that you can easily type using your thumb and holding it from same hand.
With 1.2 GHz MTK8389 quad core processor, PowerVR SGX 544MP GPU and 1 GB DDR3 RAM, this tablet manage to gets a decent Antutu benchmark score of 13074. Upon playing games like Subway surfer, Blood and Glory, Panem Run, we never observed any kind of lag and same on even normal daily usage too. Overall i am totally satisfied by the performance of the tablet.
Conclusion – MTV Slate is an Ideal Tablet
Swipe MTV Slate comes with SIM calling, HD IPS display, quad core processor, 1 GB RAM and most of all, an 8inch display size, front and rear camera which are not yet easily found in any other budget tablet. I recommend this tablet to my readers totally. Do check out my video as well of MTV slate tablet review.
