The hot summer is already making people turn on the ACs when there is immense heat level outdoors and during this period, usually many of the users get a hefty electricity bill at the end of the month. But, looks like the Government is having some plans to make you save some money. The Ministry of Power has advised the AC Manufacturers to set the cooling temperature at 24 degrees by default as it will help users save energy and minimize the bill up to a certain extent. As per a study by the Bureau of Energy Efficiency (BEE), this parameter can be pushed up to 26 degrees.

This proposal comes as a part of a campaign by the Ministry of Power, which aims to save a substantial amount of energy while reducing the greenhouse gas emissions to save the environment. The Ministry has plans to continue the campaign for the next six months to raise awareness and gather feedback. Based on the feedback, this may be made mandatory that AC makes set the default cooling temperature at 24 degrees. As per statistical data and analysis, this move may help the nation save 20 billion units of electricity in a year.

While talking about the reasons why this step is being taken, the Union Power Minister RK Singh pointed out the every one-degree increase in the temperature setting saves 6% electricity consumption. While speaking to ANI, he said, “The normal human body temperature is approximately 36-37 degrees Celsius, but a large number of commercial establishments, hotels and offices maintain a temperature around 18-21 degrees Celsius forcing people to wear warm clothes or use blankets. This is actually wastage of energy. Some countries like Japan have put in place regulation to keep the temperature at 28 degrees Celsius.”

Very soon, an advisory will be issued to manufacturers and establishments. Airports, hotels, shopping malls, offices and government buildings will be notified about this fact so that they can manage the temperature at recommended level while keeping the place comfortable. Also, all major air conditioner manufacturers were advised to inform consumers about the optimal temperature settings on their health and electricity consumption. The air conditioner manufacturers were asked to put labels on their products so that they can educate the consumers regarding the adverse effects of high cooling levels. As per the reports, the AC manufacturers have agreed and applauded to this proposal, mentioning the step to be right is a positive way. As the amount of saving is too huge, this step will help to cope up with power shortages and help the environment stay green.
