Vivo recently announced the Vivo Y95 in India, and the phone was priced at Rs. 16,990. The pricing is something that brings it to direct and fierce competition with quite a few phones from Xiaomi, RealMe, Motorola, and ASUS which are also priced under the same bracket. I used the phone for two good weeks, and I was quite surprised the way it impresses anyone for a budget phone. I guess the phone is made keeping youth in focus and for those who couldn’t afford the Vivo V11 Pro, and I can surely give you a few reasons why you should definitely consider buying one for yourself.

The most Elegant Looking Phone for the Budget

Starting off with the design, the Vivo Y95 looks really gorgeous when it comes to looks. Pick any one between Starry Black and Nebula Purple, the dual tone glossy back is something that is the best in its class at this price. The body is made out of plastic, but it definitely doesn’t feel cheap at all. The front is designed pretty elegantly with very narrow bezels around the display and the waterdrop notch on top of the display, that is preferred by many, not just me because it doesn’t make users sacrifice the viewing area.

Vivo Y95 Front

The right edge of the phone houses the volume rockers and the power button, while the left side has got the SIM and microSD tray, which is not hybrid, so users can pop in two SIM cards along with a microSD card and enjoy all the benefits. The phone is having a 6.2-inch display, but the overall footprint is quite small and also, the phone has a thickness of just 8.3 mm.

Vivo Y95 Back

On the back, there is the dual camera set up along with flash and the fingerprint scanner sits at the middle when seen horizontally, however, vertically, the placement of the scanner is good and it is easily reachable.

At the bottom, there is a headphone jack and micro USB port, along with the speaker grille. In terms of design, the phone is excellent at this price because of that waterdrop notch and the premium look. If I talk about the competitors, the RealMe 2 Pro is something at this price bracket that offers a good look, but even that design fails in front of the Vivo Y95, due to the dual-tone finish on the back. Overall, the Vivo Y95 is probably the best looking phone at this price.

Big display, coupled with a big battery

Also, the phone packs a big 6.22-inch 720p LCD display, having a resolution of 720×1,520 pixels and a tall aspect ratio of 19:9. The panel is bright and sharp. And while some people might complain that why there is no full HD display, there is a nice thought put there while choosing the display, and that is the effect on battery life. Due to the 720p display, the 4030mAh battery inside lasts a day very easily even with moderate usage and even during the days when I used the phone heavily, made a lot of phone calls, watched some videos on YouTube and played PUBG for quite some time, the battery lasted easily and till bedtime, the phone still had around 18% battery left, which is quite impressive.

An Ideal choice for Selfie Lovers!

In terms of camera, there are three camera sensors on this device- two at the back and one on the front. The dual camera module on the back consists of 13 MP primary camera, along with a 2MP secondary lens for depth sensing.

Vivo Y95 Rear Camera

While, on the front, there is a 20MP camera for selfies. The rear camera performs well in broad daylight and well-lit scenarios, and the portraits shot from the device look pretty good.

Vivo Y95 Front Camera

The front camera on the phone is really good and takes some great selfies. The phone is packed with some AI based features which makes it possible to click some images with great sharpness, detail, and saturation, though the front-facing camera is something where the phone truly excels in this price segment. There are features like AI-powered bokeh shots, using the front camera, live beautification which adjusts skin tones and smoothens the skin. So, if you are someone who is into the selfie game, the Vivo Y95 is probably the best choice at this price.

Smooth multitasking & gaming experience

In terms of performance, the Vivo Y95 really surprised me. The phone is powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 439 processor, coupled with 4GB of RAM and Adreno 505 GPU. Now, let me clear a few things here if you are looking for a comparison of the phone with others. The Snapdragon 439 is a newer addition to the smartphone chipset lineup from Qualcomm and it is quite capable or let’s say comparable to the Snapdragon 636 as it is the first chipset from Qualcomm to be built on 12nm process, and also, it can have a maximum clock speed of up to 2.0 GHz. Now, the Vivo Y95 performs exceptionally well it comes to day to day tasks. The RAM management is quite good and the phone handles everything well.

Vivo Y95 Gaming

But when it comes to gaming, most of the casual games run very smoothly. I also tried a couple of heavy games, including PUBG, at medium settings and the gameplay was smooth and there were no issues. There is also a dedicated Game Mode that can mute notifications, block incoming calls, and enable picture-in-picture view while playing so that you can play games and chat with your friends easily without having to switch between games and messaging apps. Overall, I am quite satisfied with the performance, after using the phone because by looking at the spec sheet, I judged it a bit, but the phone has exceeded my expectations.

Good pricing for a Great Experience

The Vivo Y95 is priced at Rs. 16,990. So, obviously, it is a lower mid-range phone. But, despite its low price tag, the user experience has been good and also the phone feels quite premium. The phone comes with Android 8.1 Oreo out of the box, with Vivo’s latest Funtouch OS 4.5 on top which adds many useful features to the phone.

Vivo Y95 Review

We have already talked about the Game Mode, but the OS has options like colour temperature adjustment, it can scale apps to run at the native aspect ratio, which is 19:9. There are full-screen gestures for navigation, which extends the viewing area. There are many other useful features like an inbuilt app lock, dual apps and much more. The phone performs well, the selfie camera works very well and the battery life is something beyond my imagination. If you’re someone who loves taking selfies and playing games, and if you care a lot about the look and feel of a phone, the Vivo Y95 is definitely for you. You can grab one for youself from Amazon India or Flipkart.
