Coolpad, the Chinese smartphone maker recently launched their new flagship device i.e. Cool 1. This is the first device ever from Coolpad which is launched in collaboration with LeEco combining the hardware and software capabilities of both manufacturers. Main USP of Coolpad Cool 1 is it’s dual rear 13-megapixel camera with dual-ton LED flash with highly optimized software & 4000mAh for great battery backup. We are using the device since last few days, and here is the first impression of the device:

Coolpad Cool 1 First Impression

Launched at a price of Rs 13999, this Coolpad Cool 1 is probably the first device in India to feature a dual camera at this price. Cool 1 features a 5.5 inch Full HD Display (1920 X 1080 pixels resolution) with a pixel density of 403 ppi, which is good enough for watching HD videos and games.

Running on EUI 5.6 based Marshmallow 6.0.1, the phone packs 4GB of RAM & 32 GB of internal storage, out of which 23GB is available to users. The non-removable 4000mAh battery supports quick charge 2.0, and hence you’ll be able to charge your device to 50% in approximately 30 minutes.

Coolpad Cool 1 Design & Display

Cool 1 is a craftsmanship effort of Coolpad, the device offers the same premium quality feeling as we’ve seen in previous Coolpad metallic body devices. The phone has extremely thin bezels & the upper bezel houses an 8MP camera along with the ambient sensor and lower bezel features backlit capacitive keys.

While the back and edges of the phone are entirely metallic, it doesn’t make it slippery.

All the physical buttons are on the right edge of the phone, while

Sim Card/micro SD card slot is at the left edge.

There is a dual-rear camera setup (13MP + 13MP) along with a fingerprint sensor below it at the back.

At the bottom-back, there’s the Coolpad logo with LeEco branding.

The bottom of the phone features dual speaker grilles & a Type-C USB port,

While 3.5mm audio jack along with infrared emitter is at the top of the phone.

Overall, the display is bright & vibrant because of 401ppi pixel density, and the viewing angles are great too. To protect the display from scratches, it has Corning Gorilla Glass 3.

Coolpad Cool 1 Performance & Battery Backup

Powered by Octa-core Snapdragon 652 processor coupled with Adreno 510 GPU, the phone is good enough to handle multi-tasking with ease. We didn’t notice any kind of lag while jumping from one app to another, thanks to 4GB of RAM with optimized OS. We even tried playing a graphic intensive game like Asphalt 8 which ran smoothly.

The phone achieved a score of 77,817 points in AnTuTu and 9,689 in 3DMark Ice Storm Extreme, which are good scores for a mid-ranged device. Also, there are no issues of overheating, as the phone having a metallic body, got a bit warm during charging only, otherwise during usage, it stayed cool most of the time.

In the multimedia department, the phone is able to play even 4K & high bit-rate videos without any lags. While there is a dual-speaker grille at the bottom, in actual there is only one speaker, and thankfully it doesn’t get blocked while holding the phone horizontally. The speaker volume is good enough for media and alerts & audio quality is even better with headphones.

Battery backup of Coolpad Cool 1 is excellent hands down. The non-removable 4000mAh battery lasted for 14 hours & 38 minutes in HD Video loop test. What more you can expect when the battery backup was good enough for a day and a half. Also, Quick Charge 2.0 technology, charges the phone quickly, thanks to the bundled 10W adapter.

Coolpad Cool 1 Camera

The biggest highlight of the device is its dual camera. There are two 13 MP camera on the back; one has a color sensor, and other is used for monochrome data, which when used in tandem offers better quality images, less noise in low-light pictures.

The color reproduction on the images is rich. However, the black could’ve been a little darker.

Monochrome Shot

The camera can take multiple shots quickly without any shutter lag, and the autofocus is very quick.

The primary camera is also capable of taking good macro shots of objects,

and can shot some images with excellent bokeh effect.

When taking low light images, turning ON night mode performed better in capturing light and taking some nice shots.

Focusing speed of the camera is good or rather quick and clicked images also gets saved fast. There are various shooting modes in the camera app, among which you might like SLR mode most, as it can simulate great bokeh level in images and works most of the time. The camera app is super easy to use and other than SLR, shooting modes available are HDR, Watermark, slow video, long exposure, Panorama, and GIF. In short, the app provides all those most commonly used modes which a consumer demands these days.

For video recording part, the camera can shoot 4K videos with ease, and the footage in daylight looked quite good and shots taken in low light were fine.

The front 8-megapixel camera does good work in taking selfies in good light and offers three modes i.e. Beauty mode, Normal, and Video. HDR, watermark & GIF modes are also available to use with the front camera. If enabled, the front camera also saves a copy of your selfie with face information along with the original image.

Final Verdict

Coolpad Cool1 is a value for money device and offers good performance for its price range. It has a sharp display, great battery life plus it is capable of handling most tasks required. While there is no microSD card slot available, the user has the choice to buy between 32/64 GB internal memory variant which is good enough for most users. I believe that dual camera and the battery backup would be the biggest selling points of this device and the LeEco software inside, is one of the stable customized OS you may have ever used.
